We began working with the Yavneh Day School fall 2004. A group of students, parent volunteers, teachers and the assistant principal came to Granny's Gardens in October. They participated in harvest activities and gathered seeds to plant in the gardens they planned for the coming spring.

This is the area where they planned to put their garden. They started by laying out the design on paper, then they rented a sod cuttder and began the back breaking, bone jarring job of removing the sod. Their plan was for the kids to plant bulbs that fall. (If you are do not plan to plant until spring, in the fall you can cover the sod with newspaper/cardboard and top with composted leaves or other organic material. This will eliminate the need for the sod cutter.) This is what the area looked like when they finished laying out the beds and paths. Then they added loads of mulch to the paths and compost to the garden beds. They planted, the beds with mums, pansies and spring bulbs.

First Fall Harvest at Yavneh Day SchoolFall - 2005 - The freshest salad at school! The entire school enjoyed fresh lettuce, carrots, radishes, and green onions at lunchtime in their salad. It was all freshly picked from the Yavneh Garden by Mrs. Scheier and the Kindergarten class who enjoyed harvesting the vegetables and learning the Hebrew words for them.
