In 2007 this program has been replaced by the Victory Garden Camps but it was an important program during the four years it ran.  Families in the summer program did much of the work that kept the gardens growing and replanted  for the fall.

Families
We learned how to use different tools.  The registration fee was $40 per family plus a $5 supply fee for each family member. There were two sessions to chose from, morning and evening.  Wednesday morning 9-11 a.m. or Thursday evening 7-9 p.m.

It's was a great family experience with parents and children working and learning together.  Grandparents came welcome too.

Participants were welcome to bring younger children though the program was designed to be of more interest to children who had graduated from kindergarten and older.  We taught to the parents they helped their children with the various activities

"The summer garden time caused my kids to really get excited about growing things.  They enjoyed a "behind the scenes" view of the gardening program. So much happens in the garden over the summer that we would have missed out on if we had only returned to the garden once school began.  The time we invested was well spent as we brought home plants, seeds, and a lot of information that helped us with gardening around our house. We did lots of digging & planting. This is one of the projects built
by a summer class.
We learned how to arrange
garden flowers.

We built this bench.

We learned how to carry
our tools safely.

We picked flowers to take home.

We planted seeds.

We pulled weeds.

We planted bushes.

Sometimes we helped Granny
move things around.

We built garden boxes to sit
on while we weed.

Did you know that some
flowers are edible?

We learned how to build things
for the garden.

We made cement leaves by mixing the cement with our hands than spreading it on the leaves.

We learned how to
propagate mums.

Rita Heikenfeld came one night to teach us which herbs are good to eat and how to use them.
We harvested produce, herbs and edible flowers and made a feast that we shared
