Class Garden Coordinator Job Description

The Class Garden Coordinator teaches the lesson and leads the class in the related activity.  Granny’s Garden School provides a calendar of activities by school term and grade that focus on the timing that curriculum is taught in the classroom.  Detailed lesson plans with activities support the calendar.  We also make training available and send newsletters to let you know what's coming up and what's happening in the gardens.  Following are the basic expectations for being a Class Garden Coordinator.

  • Review the pre-written lesson for the week.  In addition to posting the schedule for the season on the website, we send regular emails to let you and the teachers know what is coming up and how to participate in training;  keep in touch with your teacher and classroom volunteers to let them know what is coming up each week.  This is a good time to ask the teacher to have students prepared to bring any supplies, like pencils or clipboards from the classroom.

  • Gather the worksheets or handouts you'll need for the lesson.  Worksheets and handouts serve a dual purpose.  They're part of the educational experience, and they contain contact information for family members who want to become involved in Granny's Garden School.  Worksheets and handouts are stored in the barn.

  • Pull together materials and tools needed for lessons, and set up for the activity before you bring the class outside.  We recommend that you discuss the lesson and activity while you are still in the classroom to help keep the class focused on you.

  • Guide the class through the activity.  Plan how you will use the teacher and other classroom volunteers to help you with the activity.  Volunteers can also help with set up and clean up.

  • Return all supplies to their original storage areas.

  • Let us know how the class went, how long it took to prepare for, teach, and clean up after the class.  Staff members provide this information on their timesheet.  Volunteer coordinators can complete an activity report that is located in the hanging files in the barn or email the Class Garden Program Manager.

  • Let us know if you need coverage for an absence.  We make every effort to find an available coordinator.
