Primary Playground Gardens

“Earth knows no desolation” She smells regeneration in the moist breath of decay.” George Meredith

This garden area has been a challenge.  The location is ideal for first grade gardens, right outside of their classroom windows  It is only about 8' deep but runs for hundreds of feet.  We grew lots of sunflowers, zinnias and vegetables here the first couple of years, until the deer discovered what we were doing.  We have tried various methods to deter the deer but last fall (2011), we decided to move the first grade class gardens to a different location.  We plan to fill this area with flowers and vegetables know not to be high on the deer's preference list.

A couple of years ago, we decided to increase our already impressive collection of iris.  Toward that end, we wrote to iris societies across the country, told them what we were doing and asked them to donate rhizomes to the cause.  They responded by sending more than 500 named varieties.  Deer do not generally like iris or daffodils.  Last fall, we planted hundreds of both in this area.

We'll keep you posted.
