The gardens along the McDonald's fence are probably the most visible of all the gardens.  It is a large area that actually extends into the McDonald's parking lot.  We promised the owners of McDonald that if they would not spray along the fence line, we would keep the weeds pulled.  We have taken it a step further and allowed the flowers to expand into the area.

In 2003, as a result of the demand for more gardens, we started gardening in the twelve foot deep strip of soil along the McDonald's fence line.  The soil was all but dead from years of construction traffic and neglect.  It was so full of rubble it was difficult to get even a garden fork in the soil.

For the first time, we had to go to raised beds. We built the beds with hardwood donated by Price Lumber.  We lined the beds with newspaper then filled them with topsoil purchased with funds donated by sponsoring families.  We soon leaned that nothing would grow in the sterile topsoil.  After two years of adding leaf compost, the gardens are now fertile and lush.  The dead zone next to the driveway now grows beautiful flowers and produce for the kids to harvest.

The beds are planted with vegetables in back and flowers in front so they look nice and are handy for the kids to pick.
