We
broke ground in the courtyard summer 2002. Participants in the
summer
program planted cosmos, zinnias and alyssum in a two foot wide
area bordering the parking lot and helped build the trellis house.
This class is learning about garlic
before planting it in the garden. Fall, 2002 Kroger donated 50 garlic
bulbs. Each bulb had about a dozen cloves. The kids planted
them all over the school grounds. It came up in the spring as green
garlic (much like green onions).
Spring 2003
we expanded the gardens to include the whole front
courtyard area. We created gardens with trellises for the 2nd grade
teachers whose classrooms surround the area and received a grant from International
Paper to build a barn. This area has become the heart of our program.
Fall 2003
We decided to frame in all of the class gardens.
It was a big job but well worth the effort. We started in the fall
of 2003 and finished March 2004. We put lots of composted leaf mulch
on all of the garden beds.
Spring 2004
We added a pizza garden in the center and surrounded
it with a white picket fence
Spring 2006
Vandals destroyed much of the fencing and trellises
in the gardens. Fortunately it was in March and most of the plants
were still dormant. Unfortunately, the destruction included the trellis
house.
The community came together and helped us put most of the gardens back
and even made them better. We could not save the trellis house.
