Description
The camps are an innovative and practical idea meant to give kids the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of organic gardening, harvesting, cooking and eating fresh produce.  They will be exposed to basic wood working and photography. In addition to a wealth of knowledge, they will take home a variety of garden plants, seeds and produce.

Each day, campers will take home produce from the gardens with written instructions and ideas for preparing the food.  The type and amount will depend on the season. Each camper will create a scrapbook and receive a cd with photos of the week at camp, detailed instructions on how to create a garden and a compost pile and how to grow a variety of vegetables and flowers, plus recipes of all of the dishes prepared at camp. We hope to inspire the campers to start their own backyard organic gardens.

Schedule
Monday - Thursday the camp is from 9-12:30.   We will begin each day nurturing the gardens so they can nurture us.  Campers will plant seeds and plants, learn about herbs, pull weeds and harvest produce. Under the guidance of local chefs and other experienced cooks, they will use their harvest to produce a scrumptious brunch to share with each other. While harvesting and preparing the food they will learn, kitchen safety, and social skills. After brunch, our adventures will include a variety of adventures including woodworking, some kind of water activity, art projects (photography/nature crafts) story time and working on our scrapbook.

One day we will take a walk on the wild side, as we learn wildlife tracking skills to search for animals and identify their homes in the garden and on the nature trail. Campers are invited to pick a bouquet at the end of each day.

Friday is  a special day.  The camp runs from 9 a.m.to -3 p.m.on Friday and includes preparing and hosting a lunch from the gardens, picking bouquets and a farmer's market.  It is the opportunity for the campers to share what they have done with parents, siblings and special guests from the community that will be invited to join us for a harvest lunch at noon. While some of the campers are staffing the produce stand, others will lead our guests on tours through the gardens and assist them with picking bouquets.

The farmer's market will be open from 12:30-3 p.m.  In addition to produce, it will feature some of the camper's artwork and building projects for sale. The proceeds from the market will be used to fund scholarships for future garden camps.

Teacher to camper ratio
There will be a teacher and assistant for each group of five - six campers.  We have a low teacher to camper ratio so we can safely provide campers with a variety of fun activities that include using cooking and building tools.

Weather
The camp will take place whatever the weather.  In the event of heavy rain or thunderstorms we will work on projects inside.  We are aware of the potential of hot weather and will provide appropriate shelter and plan our activities accordingly and include cooling off periods.

"Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant."  Robert Louis Stevenson
