Sweetpotato Patch
Description of program: The Kroger Company donates enough sweetpotatoes for each first grader to have their own.  They root the sweetpotates as part of  Science Day  (last week in April).  They plant the potatoes in the sweetpotato patch the week following Mother's Day.  In the fall, the now   second graders, harvest the sweet potatoes and share them with the school for their harvest parties. 

Purpose: Introduce first graders to roots and shoots

Other Staff: Garden  Manager- 6 hours associated with preparing area for planting and assisting non-class garden classes with planting.
Project Coordinator:   3 hrs x $10 = $50 + 7 hrs. on science day
Volunteers: 2 x 5 hours on Science day.  Actual planting and havesting take place as part of class garden time.
