  • Begin by going to the classroom a few minutes ahead of time.
    • Explain the safety and gardening rules INSIDE before going out.  Depending on your class you may only have to tell  them 2-3 times or you may have to remind them before every session.
    • Explain what you are going to do that day INSIDE before going out and what is expected of them.
  • Feel free to use your own “Sign for Quiet”.  Sometimes a method different from the teachers is more effective (example: softly blowing a harmonica).  Be sure you know the teachers “Sign for Quiet” too.
  • A good tactic for regaining their attention, if you are actually in your garden, is to have everyone return to their garden spot.
  • Sometimes a whisper is better than a shout.
If you feel you have lost control, stop.  Do not try to continue to teach.  Have everyone sit down. Let the teacher take over to regain control.

"Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant."  Robert Louis Stevenson
