| Compost goes in the gardens. Mulch goes
on the paths. When we refer to compost, we are usually talking about
the pile of leaves located on
the hill in back of the school. Each year, the city dumps truck loads
of leaves in this area. After sitting there for about a year, they
have turned into great compost that we put in the garden beds.
When we refer to mulch, we are talking about the
shredded bark we use to mulch the garden paths. It is laid
on really thick 6+ inches to reduce weed growth and prevent muddy paths.
It is the responsibility of your class to keep the paths and area around
your garden heavily mulched and free of weeds and litter. The paths should
be mulched late fall and again before school lets out for the summer.
Each child carrying two to three buckets full of mulch will be enough to
get the job done. If the class does a good job of mulching, there
will be few weeds around your beds.
Where is the mulch? Except for a location
in back of the schools, near the leaf pile, where we always have
mulch available, there will be piles in your area around the time you need
them.
