The last day of school was a very
productive one for Mrs. Prather and Mrs. Steele's third grade class.
They spent most of the day having a garden party in their new class garden.
They had worked weeks before clearing the removing the sod and laying out
paths with wood chips. The day started with making sun hats from
recycled newspaper and ended with a feast of fruit, vegetables, cheese
& dips provided by parent volunteers. It's what happened in-between
that they will remember.
Working as a team, they build a reading tunnel and
planted vegetable and flower seeds in their garden for the incoming class.
They took turns learning to use hand tools like wire cutters and pliers
while working on the reading tunnel and planting seeds and dahlia tubers.
The idea for the reading tunnel
was inspired by an article in Family Fun magazine.

The classroom overlooked the reading tunnel. The idea was for it
to be a reward for 2-3 students at a time to come out to the tunnel to read.
Though the teacher's desk was right by the window, new district guidelines
prevented the tunnel from being use in this way. After three years of
trying to control the morning glories, we decided to call it an idea that did
not work for us and took it down. We use the hoops as a frame to support
the plastic covering over a couple of garden boxes - like a mini grow
tunnel.
