We have a learning center in this garden area with
a work table and benches.
-
Ideally, we want an 18" wide mulch path between the
garden along the fence and the first garden box. Sometimes, we give
some of the space over to a volunteer plant, but we try to keep some space
clear at the top of the beds.
-
On one end we have chronic problems with cars being
parked right up on the gardens and on the other end we have a deer problem.
-
When the lot is repainted, we've asked that the parking
lines be redirected but right now it's what we have to deal with.
We are requesting that people park a couple of feet away from the gardens.
-
In the past the deer have pretty much stuck to the
top half of the gardens near the woods, though last year they did chomp
on some sunflowers in the lower half. We are experimenting to see
which plants can be grown in this area. We know that the deer will
eat sweet potatoes, green beans and lettuce. This year we are trying
red and white potatoes, onions and some herbs in the first three gardens.
-
Most gardens in this area at least some red or white
potatoes planted in them. By fall many of the plants have died and
there may be only brown stems or no sign of the potatoes at all.
-
This area is the home of "Dahlia Row." So, in the
fall there are lots of dahlias for students of pick.
-
Take care not to leave rocks and tools in the grassy
areas.
-
Compost Pile: We have an actual compost station
in the area of the gardens. It is the wood structure at the top of
the parking lot. Please cut material down to 1 foot or less in length before
adding it to the pile.
-
Mulch Pile: There is a pile of shredded bark mulch
in the corner of the parking lot. Each class is responsible for spreading
the mulch in their path areas.
-
Safety: Please do not allow students to hang or climb
on the fence.
