How to Grow Dahlia
Propagating Dahlia from Seed

1. "Planting" dahlia tubers
We are actually nestling the tubers in the soil as shown in the photo on
    the right.

  • Talk about the dahlia tuber and that it is the energy storage pouch for the dahlia plant.
Supplies
- 75 dahlia tubers
- 75 labels
- black Sharpie
  Markers
- tuber containers
- seed containers
- potting soil
- dahlia seeds
- tweezers
  • Have students look at the sprout end of the tuber and see if they can find the eye where the new sprouts will emerge.  Some of the tubers may already be sprouting. Not all eyes are visible.  We are placing the tubers under the grow lights so they will warm up which is the signal that it is time to start sending our sprouts.
  • Have student write their names on a label and insert it in the  container next to their tuber.
2. Planting Dahlia Seeds
  • Instruct students to hold the seeds in one hand and,  using the tweezers, lift them out one at a time and plant about 2" apart and 1/4" deep (no deeper).  If the tweezers are not available, they can use their fingers.
  • We are planting the dahlia seeds in plastic shoe boxes, one for each garden group of six students.  Each student in the group will plant a short row (across the width of the shoe box) of three seeds.  Have each group prepare a label to identify their box.
