350 dahlia tubers

A knife or pencil sharpener
Do ahead: sharpen pencils
Dahlia fact sheet & questionnaire
If the weather permits, the 2nd grade will plant dahlias.  If it rains they will plant seeds.

Planting dahlias: Students will read and follow instructions provided to plant a dahlia tuber. They will then sit down and read facts about dahlias and answer five questions.

1. We will be working with two classes at a time.  Plan to have four adults per class (three plus the teacher).

2. Be prepared with shovels stuck in the planting area about 12" apart and a clipboard propped against the fence in front of the shovel.

3. Students will go outside as if to recess. They will follow the fence line up to "Dahlia Row". As they approach the planting area, each adult will take 5-6 students to assist.  .

4. We will be planting all along the fence that sits on top of the retaining wall as we did the first year. The soil  will be pre worked so planting will be easy.

5. When they arrive at the planting site, students will stand in front of the shovels that will be stuck in the soil where they are to plant their dahlia tubers. Propped against the fence, there will be a clipboard for each child with an instruction sheet and pencil attached.  Reading the instructions is part of the experience.

6. After they dig their holes (6-8" deep), give each child a tuber to plant.
explaining what they are and point out things for the kids to notice.

7. When each child finishes, direct her to a designated area to sit down and complete their exercise... assuming there is time.

8. As your group finishes planting, place the shovels in the new location in preparation of the next class.
