Preparation:
  • Dahlia tubers are loosened ahead of time by adult volunteers with garden forks.
Instructional procedures:
Supplies needed
  • Divide the class into four groups  (There are more than four activities listed here.  Which activities you will be involved with, in addition to lifting dahlias, will be depend on where on the school grounds you are working.)
  • Put an adult in charge of each group
  • Select a recorder from each group.  This person will carry a clipboard, pencil and data form.
  • clipboard
  • data sheets
  • pencils
Team 1 - lifting dahlias
  • Each member removes a pre dug dahlia clump from the designated area
  • If there is an identification tag on the clump, take care that it does not fall off.
  • Using your fingers, gently remove the soil from around the tubers.
  • Cut the stem back to about 4" from the clump.
  • If there is an identification tag on the stem, remove it from the stem and retie it, securely but gently, around one of the tubers.
  • Report the # of tubers in the clump and any information that is on the label to your record keeper.
  • Place the clump on the drying rack.
  • Garden clippers
  • Drying racks
Team 2 - Digging test hole - The questions are: Can canna tubers be safely wintered over by burying them in a pit 3 feet below ground level?  Will they fare better if they are kept in a plastic container or will they do just as well if they just buried in the soil?  How many shovels full of soil will it take to dig a hole that is 3' square?
  • Team #2 will work on digging out the hole in the designated area.  The soil will be piled near the hole, still in the garden, not on the grass.
  • When you are not digging, please make sure your shovel is stuck in the ground.

  • Record the how many shovels full of soil your team removes from the hole.
  • 6- Lil-Hog shovels
Team 3 - Laying shredded bark mulch on the garden paths
  • You will find shovels and buckets by the mulch pile
  • Fill your buckets using the guidelines you learned in earlier classes (i.e. Place your bucket close to the pile.  Dig from the bottom of the pile (If you hear your shovel scrape on the blacktop, you are doing it right).  Do not climb on the pile.
  • Dump the buckets of mulch in designated area.
  • Record the total number of buckets full of mulch your team moves.
  • 6 Lil-Hog shovels
  • 6 buckets
Team 4 - Lifting cannas - The cannas have already been pre dug.  Some of the clumps are very large and may require two people to work together.  Bring you clump to one of the work tables where an adult will assist you with gently breaking the clump down into more manageable sizes.
  • Record the number of dahlia tubers in each clump
Team 5 - Transplanting biennial seedlings
  • Seeds for these plants were planted earlier this year.  They will not bloom until next spring.  As you will see, there are way too may seedlings in each area for the plants to grow properly.
  • You will be be shown a location where the seedlings are to ge planted.
  • Dig the hole for each seedling deep enough so the root will not be cramped.  Use your hands to press the soil around the plant.

  • Gently pour a cup of water around the plant
  • Six trowels
  • Watering cans or
  • cups & water buckets
Team 6 - Planting Tulip bulbs
  • Dig a hole 5-6": deep
  • Place the soil next to your hole.
  • Place bulb in the hole pointed side up.
  • Use your hand to replace the soil over the bulb.
  • 6 Lil-hog shovels
  • Tulips

Dahlias

    * Would like to try and keep track of the dahlias that are in bloom by taking a photo and numbering each as we dig them.

    * ahead of time, prepare labels to attach to the clump.

    * cut screens for black plant trays to lay dahlias on to dry and make easy to transport to the car.

    * Determine plastic containers we can use for storage.

Have back of van cleaned out  for temporary storage and to transport.
