Uses seed collection to discuss science topics of
different plant life cycles and interdependence of plants and animals. Uses
seed packaging for Granny's Seed Sharing Project to reinforce volunteerism in a
community.
Most of the plants in Granny's Gardens were grown
from seeds planted by the students. Each year the students plant
hundreds of annual, biennial and perennial seeds in the gardens.
Some classes use grow labs to start seeds and grow plants under lights
but most of our seeds are started outdoors. We start some seeds in large
containers but most flower and vegetable seeds are planted right in the
gardens. The key to being successful with starting plants from seed is
to give them the adequate water in the first few weeks. In the fall,
you will see classes out all of the time collecting seeds to share with
other schools and for planting next year. In the process of planting
the seeds, picking the flowers and then harvesting the seeds, the students
learn first hand, the life
cycle of plants.
"Don't judge each day by the
harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant." Robert Louis Stevenson
