 Make a seed Sandwich

A seed sandwich is a great way for younger children to  prepare smaller seeds for planting.

Supplies needed
  • toilet paper, torn in strips of two squares.
  • two squares per child.
  • seeds
  • ruler
  • marker
  • tweezers
1.  Fold a strip of toilet paper in half along the tear line (so you have a double square).

2. Using a ruler and an ink pen (pencil will tear the paper) make a grid of dots one inch apart. There will be about 12 dots on the average piece of toilet paper.  With older kids: have them measure the toilet paper square and determine how many seeds it will hold assuming the seeds are placed 1" from the edge and 1" apart.

Younger kids can lay a piece of toilet paper over the graph and trace the dots.

3. Lay out the strips and spray lightly with water. You want the paper damp, not sopping wet.

4. Using the tweezers, place a seed on each dot.

5.  Carefully, place a separate folded strip of toilet tissue over the seeds (you now have four layers of tissue Place one seed on each drop of glue.

Actual size of a 4" x 4.5" piece of toilet tissue

    6. Lightly spray the top lay of tissue and gently press it down.

    7. Allow the sandwich to dry completely then cut into seed squares to plant.  When planting, be sure none of the paper is sticking above the soil. It will cause the seeds to dry out.
