It can be difficult to see the difference between the zinnia seed and the shaft that surrounds it. Students will have to train their eyes to see the difference.

Collecting: Remove the whole seed head and lay on a screen or tray in a single layer to dry.  Store the dried pods loosely in a paper bag until ready to separate the seed from the shaft. 

When packaging the seeds, put about 1/2 teaspoon full in each package.
