It was the brainstorm of 2nd grade teacher, Cindy Krone to introduce the Journey North project to the garden program. School children in all 50 U.S. States and 7 Canadian Provinces are  tracking the arrival of spring by planting the same variety of tulip at  the same depth in their school yards. As they see signs of the tulips emerging and then blooming they make regular reports to Journey North who makes the information available on the website.  The project is  much more than just planting lots of tulips and the learning opportunities are  numerous and not limited to tulips.

Mrs. Krone is the driving force and her class will be doing most of the participation the first year. Thanks to the generosity of the Hilton Garden Inn we were able to invite all of the 2nd grade classes to participate in planting the bulbs in the test bed.   The Hilton purchased 600 Red Emperor tulip bulbs, 100 of which were planted at the Hilton Inn at the Wards corner exit of I-275.  Mrs. Krone's class made a field trip to the inn on a rainy Monday early in November to plant the tulips, making sure to plant them the correct depth.  The Hilton is now a part of the study.

The Hilton folks did more than sponsor the program they also helped the kids plant the bulbs. In the photo on the right above Peter Johnson, Cindy Krone, Roberta Paolo (aka Granny), Howard Scott and Mac Trivedi.

After all the bulbs were planted we had hot chocolate and donuts on the hotel patio.  We planted tulips in the school yard.  As always we took time out for other learning.  One child is estimating and the other investigating.
