  • Gardening in November- planting at LECC

The prediction for this week is for a "few showers" and warm temperatures, as high as 72! Yea!! We could of used some of that warmth planting bulbs at LECC last week. Amazingly, though, I did not hear one teacher or student complain about the cold.

At first glance, it may appear there is nothing left to do in the gardens. If you look closely, though, you will see there are even still some flowers blooming. Last week, classes were planting bulbs at the primary and elementary schools as well as LECC.

Mrs. Carter's three science classes lifted dahlias and helped to prepare them for winter storage.

Mrs. Craig's two sciences classes worked on digging holes to plant the six new apple trees that Natorp's donated to the program.

Other classes were collecting seeds, putting compost on their gardens and visiting the nature trail.

Many classes witll be taking advantage of the mild weather this week to expand their classrooms to the outdoors. Let your child's teacher know if you can help.

The Gardener family decked out for Halloween!

Nancy Garfinkel got the Gardener family all decked out for Halloween. I am always amazed at the clever outfits she comes up with! The photo is of Rosemary in her sparkling hat.

We know it's fall when the leaf trucks start dumping.

The city started dumping truck loads of leaves onto our composting area last week. It's always amazing to see the huge piles this time of year and to see how much they have decomposed by spring. The leaf compost is the secret to the success of our gardens.

Thank you to the unknown doner who dropped of two plastic, wheeled trash cans by the barn this weekend. They will be a great help with storing our hundreds of feet of hoses. By using the trash cans to store the hoses in the areas they are used, rather then gathering them up and taking them to the barn, we will save many hours of work in the fall and spring.
