Ceating a New Garden Bed

Creating a garden bed can be accomplished with students, thereby giving them a sense of ownership and pride over their garden.  The best time to make a bed is fall.  This gives the compost time to settle before you plant the bed.  If you decide to make the bed in the same season that you will plant, be sure to water in the compost well before you plant.

If you do not have a ready supply of compost, you may need to make a monetary investment to purchase compost for your beds.  This activity requires advance planning to collect newspapers and cardboard that serve as the base for your beds and paths to smother weeds and grass and to obtain the compost and wood chips you will use.

If you don't have child-sized spades or buckets at this stage of your program, request adult volunteers from the class to help you with the class during school.  Have them bring their shovels and wheel barrows.  Or, make it a family event after school or on a weekend by inviting students and their families to build the beds and paths.
