On the left the first root (gray) has just burst clear of the seed and is burrowing downwards in search of moisture and nutrients. On the right, the first leaves (green) travel in the other direction, upwards in search of light.

Materials

Roll of inexpensive paper towels
quart plastic sandwich bags
15 seeds per student
calendar
Black Sharpie markers

Support staff

One adult per group of six students.

Instructional procedures:
  • Fold a paper towel up like an accordion.
  • Unfold and lay five seeds about 1" apart in-between the first layer, pull a flap down over that layer and place five more seeds.
  • Do this three times until you have a total of 15 seeds pressed between the folds.
  • Lightly spray the folded bundle with water, fold in half and place in a quart plastic bag.. 
  • On the bag - write the child's name, today's date and projected germination date.
  • Use a calendar to determine the projected germination date.  For dahlia seeds it's 7-15 days for others check package or the internet.
  • These seed packets will be kept in the classroom. 
  • When about 10 days to 2 weeks have passed, carefully open the seed packets and record how many of the seeds germinated. 
  • Chart the results for each team and the whole class.
