Life cycle: Broadleaf plantain is a perennial weed that reproduces by seeds. It produces a rosette or cluster of leaves at ground level and has a primarily fibrous root system.

It is easily pulled by hand when the soild is moist.  The plant in the photograph is developing seed pods.

History: These green, weedy plants are native to Europe and Asia, but now grow practically anywhere in the world where there is sufficient water. Plantain should not be confused with the banana-like vegetable of the same name.

Plantain is edible and said to have a flavor similar to spinach.  In the past, plantains were used medicinally to treat bites, cuts, and stings, as well as for mouth, eye, and tongue ailments.  (from The Ohio State University Ohio Perennial and Biennial Weed Guide)
