Life
cycle: Broadleaf plantain is a perennial weed that reproduces by seeds.
It produces a rosette or cluster of leaves at ground level and has a
primarily fibrous
root system.
It is easily pulled by hand when the soild is moist.
The plant in the photograph is developing seed pods.
History: These green, weedy plants are native to
Europe and Asia, but now grow practically anywhere in the world where there
is sufficient water. Plantain should not be confused with the banana-like
vegetable of the same name.
Plantain is edible and said to have a flavor similar to
spinach. In the
past, plantains were used medicinally to treat bites, cuts, and stings, as well
as for mouth, eye, and tongue ailments. (from
