Fourth Grade Lesson Preparation:
The objectives of this lesson are:
* Students will learn some history and nutritional facts about broccoli.
* Students will identify the structure of the broccoli plant.
* Students will be able to discuss the importance of eating 5 servings of fruits
and vegetables for a healthy lifestyle.
* Students will be able identify broccoli as an excellent source of vitamins,
minerals and proteins.
* Students will recognize broccoli as a vegetable that helps to prevent cancer.

Teaching The Lesson:

Tap Prior Knowledge:
* How does broccoli grow?
* What part of the plants do we eat?
* What does heat do to these vegetables?
* Do you like broccoli better cooked or raw?
* Which is better for you, cooked or raw?
* Which nutrients do you think brocoli contains?
* Which of these items has more vitamin C – an orange, glass of orange juice, or broccoli?

LESSON:
1. Use the food guide pyramid to identify the food group for broccoli. Discuss the importance of eating 5 serving of fruits and vegetables everyday to stay healthy.
2. Broccoli Info To Share: Our bodies cannot manufacture their own protein, so we have to depend on the plants and animals we eat for our protein supply. Broccoli is enriched with proteins. More
than 45% of calories in broccoli is protein.   Broccoli contains a great supply of nutrients for our
bodies. It contains vitamin B1, C and a great amount of calcium, sulfur and potassium. Broccoli has more Vitamin C than an orange and more calcium than a glass of milk. One medium spear has 3 times more fiber than a slice of wheat bran bread. Broccoli is also one of the richest sources of
Vitamin A. It help to reduce the risk of cancer in women. The enzymes in broccoli help fight toxic substances that aid in protecting our bodies from cancer.

3. SNACK: Flower Power and Delicious Dip
1.Wash broccoli. Pull off leaves. Separate florets.
2.Steam in boiling water for 2 minutes. Place in bowl of
ice water.
3.Sprinkle with salt and pepper or Parmesan cheese.
Eat! Fantastic!

Delicious Dip
1. Mix * cup low fat cottage cheese and 2 Tbs. Cheddar cheese
2. Add * tsp. Dill weed, * tsp. Worcestershire sauce
3. Mash with a fork, dip vegetable in and eat.
