Adventures in the Potato Patch                                                               Planting    Harvesting

"Ability is what you're capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do.  Attitude determines how well you do it."  Lou Holtz

Granny's Potato Patch Adventure starts with students planting seed potatoes in March and concludes with harvesting in the second week of their return to school for the fall term. The  second week of school is packed full of new experiences in Granny's Gardens. It is an opportunity for students to visit their new gardens and to take inventory of what is growing there.  Community was one of the lessons to be learned. "We are all part of a community and the students who had this garden last year planted the gardens in the spring so you would have produce for your fall harvest," said the garden coordinator.
The potato patch adventure actually begins in late February when potato grower Ralph Child, owner of Childstock Farms in Malone, New York, donates seed potatoes for the students to plant.  Because shipping can cost as much as the potatoes, Ralph arranges to have them included with a large shipment to a farmer outside of Columbus.

Parent Mark Haberer drives up that way regularly as part of his job.  Each year, he picks up the potatoes and brings them to the school.

Students begin planting potatoes around St. Patrick's Day.  They harvest the potatoes their second week back to school.  The process is used to teach many things, including measuring, weighing, estimating, graphing, and plant science. They are also used to introduce students to some of the many healthy ways potatoes can be prepared

"Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant."  Robert Louis Stevenson
