Flor del Sol School
Flor del Sol School is unique in that it serves seriously emotionally disabled children ranging in ages eight-14. The garden has been in place since January 1998.  Not only have students been connected with nature and have learned their role in the life cycle, but students have been provided opportunities to relieve aggressive behaviors in a socially acceptable manner by pulling weeds, digging trenches, and turning soil. As a part of the nutrition component of the school garden, many parents have taken an interest in better nutrition for their families. In fact, one child has made small changes in his diet and is eating more fresh fruits and vegetables and not as much "junk" food and has lost over 30 pounds in 5 months! We have seen many positive effects in our students. We have found, however, it is not the finished product in working in the garden that is most important. Rather, what is important is the process. Students report feeling calmer when engaged in garden activities. We believe our garden has been a success!
